Monday 20th April - Ramadan

This week we are thinking about the important value of Tolerance of Different Cultures and Religions.

Tolerance means that we are able to accept that people may belive different things to us and still be able to live together happily. The best way to become tolerant of other people's beliefs is to learn more about them.

This week we are learning about Ramadan, an important time for Muslims.

What is Ramadan?

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims won't eat or drink during the hours of daylight. This is called fasting.

Ramadan remembers the month the Qur'an (the Muslim holy book) was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

When is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The exact dates of Ramadan change every year. This is because Islam uses a calendar based on the cycles of the Moon.

In 2020 in the UK, Ramadan will begin in the evening of Thursday 23 April and will end on Saturday 23 May.

.Think or talk about these questions to see how much you have remembered about Ramadan:

  • When do Muslims fast between during Ramadan?
  • What things do Muslims try to do more often during Ramadan?
  • What is the celebration at the end of Ramadan called?

A reflection:

You could read this quitely to yourself or ask an older brother, sister or grown up to read it to you:

Saying ‘No’ to what we want is often difficult. None of us likes to deny our bodies food, TV or a long lie-in at the weekend.

When do you find it hard to say ‘No’?

Think about how long the days are at this time of the year. The sun gets up early and doesn't set until late in the evening. Would it be hard for you to say 'no' to food while the sun is up, for a day, for a week or for a whole month?

What could you learn from a month of saying 'no' to food whenever you felt like eating.

Would you learn what it feels like to be weak or like the poor in the world who live like this most days. Would you learn to be thankful for all the good things you have?

A prayer to say together:

Dear God,
we pray for those who are preparing to fast during Ramadan.
Help them to deny all the needs of their bodies.
Help them to draw closer to Allah.
Help them to grow in compassion for those who are hungry in the world.
Amen.
