St George's Day - Thursday 23rd April

St George

St George is the patron saint of England. According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.

His feast day is April 23, and this is celebrated as England's national day.

Watch the video to find out more about our patron saint.

You will need to sign into Discovery Education to watch this video

Think or talk about these questions to see how much you remember:

  • Which country was St George born in?
  • What did he grow up to do?
  • Why do you think George spoke out about the way that Christians were being treated?
  • What other brave things did he do in this story?

You might like to say this prayer together:

Heavenly Father,
give us the bravery of St George to stand up for what we believe.
Give us the strength to overcome the dragons in our lives and in the world.
And where we see people in distress, give us the courage to help them.
Amen

An activity to do:

Make a St George’s flag out of red and white paper, then in each quarter, write or draw some times that you have been been brave.

There have been many books, stories, poems and songs written about the legend of St George. Some are very serious, some like this children's story by Chris Wormell, are not.

Once the assembly is over, enjoy listening to this story:
