Year 1 – Ash & Oak Classes
As children transition from EYFS into KS1, we continue to build upon the characteristics of effective learning and the children’s eagerness to be independent in their own learning. In KS1 children take part in a range of whole class, small group and independent work. This year we are developing an enquiry- based approach to topic work. Children will be given a key question when each topic is introduced and teachers will then follow the children’s ideas and interests. At the start of each topic teachers will plan some key activities to meet the National Curriculum objectives, but will also allow opportunities to follow the children’s interests. The topic questions and themes will follow a two-year cycle so teachers and children in year 1 and 2 can work on the same theme at the same time, providing opportunities for collaborative work across the key stage.
During this year (cycle 1) we will be using these key questions:
- Do you like to be beside the sea side?
- How can we plan the best Christmas?
- Who deserves a Gold medal?
- What makes toys work?
- Would you like to go on holiday to the moon?
- Who lives in a house like this?
The children will also participate in Forest School sessions throughout the year. Please click here for information about the benefits of Forest Schools.
