What to expect - Year 1

Y1 Home Learning 

Approximate Directed Activity Time - 1 hour  - 1.5 hours

Activities can be spread out across the day to suit your circumstances

 

Ideally, every day we would like children to do the following: 

Read to an adult or older sibling for 10 minutes 

Practice phonics with an adult for 10 minutes 

Spend around 10-15 minutes writing practising their writing 

Practice counting or using NumBots for 10 minutes 

Spend around 10 minutes completing a maths task 

and across the week 

complete 2-3 topic themed activities (Science, RE, Art etc.)


 

Completing Structured Activities 

These activities will need an adult to work with the children so that they get the most from their learning. Activities can be spread out across the day to suit your circumstances.

English: please do the following each day

  • Reading (10 minutes).
  • Ask an adult to hear your child read their school reading book.
  • Listen out for them reading confidently, without having to sound each word out individually.
  • Can they read with expression? Please spend a few minutes talking about the book, what happened in the book, what they think about it and why etc.
     
  • Phonics (10- 15 minutes)
  • Recap and revise the sounds that the children know already a sound mat has been provided to help you.
  • You have also been given some words to practice reading with your child. Please encourage them to sound button (place a dot under each separate sound in the word) the words as they read them.
     
  • Writing (10-15 minutes)
  • ‘Super Sentences’. The children should write at least 1 super sentence a day. This can be about anything they like. When they are writing ask them to
    • practice what they want to say in their head before they write
    • use a capital letter and full stop
    • leave spaces between words
    • sound out words - use the sound mat provided.

For some children one really good sentence is enough, some will be able and keen to write more. Go with your child’s level of confidence and ability - this should be a fun activity.
 

Maths: please do the following each day

  • Counting (10 minutes) Practising counting in 10s, 2’s and 5’s. Use the key songs provided in homework
  • Activity Books (10-15 minutes) Encourage your child to spend 10-15 minutes per day working through the activities in the maths practice book or, later on, posted on the website each week. 

Other Subject areas:

  • There will also be 2 -3 other tasks to complete during the week. These will be published on the children's Virtual School area.  following tasks should also be completed during the week

 

Independent Activities

You should schedule some time each day for your child to work independently from you. Below are some activities that children can complete without (or with minimal) adult support or supervision.

Purple Mash:

  • There will be key ‘2DO’s’ set for your child to complete on this. Please ensure they press the ‘hand in’ button

Activity packs:

  • Your child will have been sent home with a home learning pack, which contains an activity pack.
  • The activities in the pack are designed to practice key skills and be completed with minimal adult support.
  • You can choose which to do and when. 

Discovery Education. https://www.discoveryeducation.co.uk/

  • Children can freely explore the resources in the KS1 section. There are activities for all areas of the curriculum with videos to watch and activities to play including Phonics and Maths resources. It is a closed site and safe for children to use independently.

Purple Mash:

  • While there are 2Do’s for the children to complete, this isn’t all that they can do. Purple Mash has a range of activities, from drawing pictures and writing captions to exploring modelling. It is a closed site and safe for children to use independently.

Phonics Play https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/

  • A great site to continue reading words and applying sounds. You can access many games for free.

If you would like to limit screen time you could encourage your child to:

  • Start a scrapbook, write and draw about their favourite character, person, animal etc.
  • Write letters or make cards for family and friends

 

Other ideas and resources for things to do together

  • Handwriting - Practise joining letters- use the https://www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/ website or your child’s handwriting book.There are lots of animations and worksheets that can be used.
     
  • Alphabet work practice learning the names of letters in the alphabet and writing the alphabet in order
     
  • Make a cake and practise measuring all the ingredients. Practise measuring in different ways (length, weight, volume etc)
     
  • Outdoor learning activities
    • Learning the names of different flowering plants and trees.
    • Identifying the different parts of a plant.
    • Recognising the change in seasons – How do we know it is Spring? (hours of daylight, seasonal changes)
    • Bug hunting and recording.
